Our son, Daniel Garrett Gogel, passed away suddenly on Tuesday in his home in Los Angeles. Daniel graduated at the top of his class from Bernardsville High School in New Jersey, attended Bates College in Lewiston, Maine and worked for US PIRG in Boston and later in Los Angeles. He was 48 years old when he was suddenly taken by a heart attack.
None of this, of course, says anything about who Daniel was. He was bright, insightful, and funny, bringing both joy and sorrow to our world. He could make you laugh with a quick turn of a phrase. He could make you view the world in new and amazing ways. He was loquacious, and could talk your ear off. He was an avid fisherman, which gave both him and myself some of the best moments of our lives together.
Above all, he was courageous; he battled for decades with physical issues but he never gave up. To his doctors who helped him, we owe you a debt of gratitude.
Daniel leaves behind his father and stepmom, along with a host of loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. His beloved rescue cat, Hermine, will be well cared for by family per his wishes. Ultimately, Dan leaves behind both bittersweet memories and an aching, empty space that can never be filled.
