With deep love and admiration, we honor the life of Harry Havgitian, a man of quiet strength, boundless curiosity, and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. Harry passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025, in hospice care in Downey, California, after a courageous battle with a brain tumor.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Harry lived a life rich with purpose, discovery, and service. He found joy in traveling, exploring nature, and riding his motorcycle, embracing the open road as a place of both solace and adventure. His love for the world extended beyond personal experiences—he devoted his life to protecting the environment, advocating for human rights, and improving communities.
Harry’s career was as remarkable as his passions. As an aerospace engineer, urban planner, environmentalist, and human rights activist, he left a lasting impact in every field he touched. Among his proudest achievements was participating in a United Nations Conference on Environmental Sustainability in Istanbul, Turkey, where he worked alongside global leaders to address pressing environmental challenges. He also played a significant role in supporting Armenia’s transition to independence after the fall of the Soviet Union, helping to establish critical infrastructure and promote human rights during a pivotal time in the nation’s history.
Though reserved, Harry possessed a sharp wit and a dry sense of humor that endeared him to those around him. He never sought recognition for his work, preferring to be remembered simply for the good he did for others and the meaningful contributions he made to his community.
Harry is survived by his longtime partner, Margaret Hennessy; his first cousins, Jeanne Alan and Diana Hagopian; his dear friends, Andy and Virginia Cohn; and Molly Hennessy, daughter of Margaret Hennessy. He is also lovingly remembered by Lori Whalen, Tom Hempel, Wilma Oman, and Kim Manning, siblings of Margaret Hennessy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sarah and Gabriel Havgitian.
Friends and family will forever hold Harry in their hearts, cherishing his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. His journey may have ended, but his legacy will live on in the lives he touched and the causes he championed.
