Sylvia Kotin, 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on 01/30/2025, in Los Angeles, California. Born in San Antonio, Texas, Sylvia began life as the "poster child" for the Jewish orphanage of Louisiana (1939-1943). She rejoined her parents, Rose Estelle Spillman and Julius Weltchek, in Michigan (1943-1962).
In 1962, with a family of her own, Sylvia moved to Los Angeles where her career as a nurse took her from the Operating Room at Cedars Sinai, to assisting plastic surgeon Dr. Kurt Wagner. She served as a private duty nurse until she retired at age 74.
A perennial student of life, Sylvia was an avid reader who pursued painting, needle-point, and knitting, and played a mean game of mahjong. Discovering there was a lack of elderly single groups she began Sylvia's Super Singles, a place to mingle.
She is survived by her sister, Maria Brown, her nephew, Martin Weltchek, her daughters, Rena Jacobs and Allyson Bakshi, her grandson, Julian Jacobs (Kari Jacobs), granddaughters Ruby Jacobs, Emma Jacobs ( Jacobs Himmel ), great-grandchildren Olive and Grey Jacobs.
